Living with a neurological condition means carrying a lot in your head — symptoms that come and go, questions you meant to ask, changes that are hard to put into words. Too much of it gets lost between short appointments.

Lantern is our attempt to help. It is an evidence companion: a calm place to capture your own words and named questionnaires, organise them clearly, and share them with the people looking after you. Lantern does not diagnose, and it never tells you what anything means — your clinician does that.

What Lantern is — and isn't

  • A place for your own words. Symptoms, changes, questions, good days and hard days — logged when they happen, before they're forgotten, and kept verbatim.
  • A set of optional check-in tasks. Short activities on your phone that record simple, neutral measurements you can choose to share. They are experimental, and not a cleared or approved medical device.
  • One clear record. Everything organised into a clinician-legible summary you choose to share.

It is not a diagnosis, a medical opinion, or a verdict on whether you're "fine." It does not score you, rate you, or compare you to "normal." Only a qualified clinician can interpret your record.

How Lantern works

  1. Capture, in your own words. Note a symptom, a change, or a question. A few words is enough. Lantern keeps what you write exactly as you wrote it.
  2. (Optional) Take a short check-in task. A brief, skippable activity that records a neutral measurement — a number of taps, a sway path length — never a result or a rating.
  3. Review your record. Your notes, logged events, and any measurements, gathered in one place in date order, in plain language.
  4. Share it with your clinician. You choose what to include and hand over a clear summary. They read it and interpret it. The point is a better-prepared conversation, not a verdict from an app.

Who Lantern is for

Lantern may help if you live with a neurological condition and want to track symptoms and questions between appointments, if you're looking into unexplained symptoms and want an organised record to take to a GP or specialist, or if you support someone else as a carer or family member and want a shared, clearly-labelled record.

Lantern is not for getting a diagnosis, for reassurance that something is "nothing to worry about," or for emergencies. If you have sudden, severe, or frightening symptoms — for example signs of a stroke, a first seizure, sudden loss of vision, or difficulty breathing — do not use the app. Contact your local emergency service straight away.

How Lantern is meant to be used

  • As a companion, not a clinician. Lantern helps you capture and organise. It does not diagnose, and it never replaces professional medical advice.
  • On your terms. You choose what to record and what to share; nothing leaves your phone without your say-so.
  • Honestly. We don't claim clinical validation, regulatory clearance, or outcomes we can't evidence. Where something is experimental — like the digital tests and the clinician-facing prescreening tooling — we say so plainly, wherever it appears.

Privacy & consent

Your record is personal, and it stays under your control.

  • You consent before anything is captured. Each check-in task asks before it uses a sensor — the touchscreen, motion sensors, or the microphone for voice tasks — and you can decline any of them and still use the rest of Lantern.
  • Your data stays with you by default. Wherever possible, your notes and measurements are kept and processed on your device. For voice tasks, audio is handled on your device, and you choose whether to keep a recording or only the measurement. You can delete anything you've captured.
  • Nothing is shared without your say-so. Lantern does not send your record anywhere on its own. You decide what goes into a clinician summary, and when.
  • What Lantern deliberately does not do: it does not attach an interpretation, score, percentile, or risk figure to your data, and it does not detect, predict, forecast, or alert on anything.
  • You can erase everything. Delete your data in the app, or send a data-deletion request from the web — no app or account required.

Read the full Privacy Policy and Consent notice for the detail: the legal bases, what stays on your device, our processors, and your rights under UK data-protection law.

Some parts of Lantern — including the check-in tasks and any clinician-facing tooling — are early-stage and experimental. The published policies are complete drafts still undergoing final data-protection and legal review before launch; we say so plainly rather than imply a sign-off we don't have.
